Molecular distillation is an important separation technique widely used in the fields of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. Although molecular distillation is used in both fields, they have some differences in the practical application of molecular distillation because of their different application purposes and methods.

Molecular distillation in traditional Chinese medicine.

In traditional Chinese medicine, molecular distillation is often used to extract active ingredients from plants, such as essential oils, aromatic substances and alkaloids. These active ingredients can be used to make products such as herbal tablets, medicinal wines, spices and cosmetics.

The active ingredients in herbal medicines are usually found in the flowers, leaves, roots, bark, fruits, seeds and other parts of the plant, and they are usually non-polar compounds. Therefore, the application of molecular distillation in traditional Chinese medicine mainly involves the separation of these non-polar compounds by temperature adjustment during the distillation process.
Molecular distillation in traditional Chinese medicine is usually performed at low temperatures to prevent decomposition of the active ingredients. For example, molecular distillation used to extract essential oils from plants is usually carried out at a temperature of 50-100 °C. Moreover, due to the differences in the amount and nature of the active ingredients present in different plants, the operating conditions and processes of molecular distillation may vary as a result. For example, the extraction of essential oils from flowers usually requires low-temperature distillation, while the extraction of resinous substances requires high-temperature distillation.

Molecular Distillation in Western Pharmaceuticals
In western pharmaceuticals, molecular distillation is often used to prepare high-purity pharmaceutical ingredients and pharmaceutical formulations. For example, solvents such as ethanol, acetone and benzene can be prepared by molecular distillation which can be used to prepare high purity pharmaceutical ingredients and pharmaceutical formulations. In addition, molecular distillation can be used to prepare high-purity compounds such as alkaloids, hormones, and vitamins, which can be used in the preparation of drugs or as pharmaceutical raw materials.

In western pharmaceuticals, the application of molecular distillation is usually carried out at medium to high temperatures to obtain high purity compounds. For example, molecular distillation for the preparation of high purity hormones is usually carried out at temperatures of 200-300°C.

The difference between molecular distillation in traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine.
1. Different application purposes
Molecular distillation in traditional Chinese medicine is mainly for the extraction of active ingredients from plants. The molecular distillation in western medicine is mainly for the preparation of high-purity drug materials and pharmaceutical preparations.

2. Different operating conditions
Molecular distillation in traditional Chinese medicine is usually carried out at low temperature to avoid the decomposition of active ingredients. While the molecular distillation in western medicine is usually carried out at medium and high temperatures to obtain high purity compounds.

3. Different application scope
Molecular distillation in traditional Chinese medicine is mainly for non-polar compounds in plants, such as essential oils, aromatic substances and alkaloids. In contrast, molecular distillation in western medicine can be used to prepare a variety of high-purity compounds, including non-polar compounds and polar compounds.

Application prospect of molecular distillation.
With the continuous progress and improvement of molecular distillation technology, its role in the application of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine will be more prominent. For traditional Chinese medicine, molecular distillation technology is expected to solve the problem of low efficiency and poor extraction effect of traditional extraction methods; for western medicine, molecular distillation technology is expected to improve the purity of the drug and the bioavailability of the drug in vivo. In addition, in drug analysis and industry, molecular distillation technology also has a wide range of application prospects.

In conclusion, molecular distillation technology has different applications and roles in the application of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, but both play a very important role. The continuous development and application of molecular distillation technology will also further advance the development of preparation and analysis technology of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, as well as provide more choices for disease treatment.
